So I was very impressed by Dr. Condello's presentation at the conference. I have thought about the many uses of this, but has anyone thought of or entertained the idea of raising prawns in said condo? my thought is you build a similar unit, but have some horizontal mesh "Substrate" as the prawn industry calls it, and then feed them! I feel if i can raise a fair amount to eat and a few to feed my fish, awesome!

any thoughts?

Very interesting! We had those big Australian Prawns from a local grower a few years back and they were amazing! I guess the first order of business would be located the little guys. If they can be raised in Nebraska, you can just about raise them anywhere!

this guy sells them and is a 3 hour drive for me. I emailed him to see what he thinks about the idea. they do like warm water. his website has a LOT of good info, even studies about how to make this a successful business adventure.

cb,
Here is recent thread with a picture of one I built using Bruce's specs:

I *think* Bruce already put part list/instructions on here and I'll try to find them.

CB,
Couldn't find Bruce's instructions so I'll briefly detail:

Parts list:
4 10' 3/4" PVC
2 rolls 3 ft. x 15 ft. Black Hardware Net (http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-...p;storeId=10051)
8 3-way 3/4" PVC connectors (http://shop.dpsbargainbasement.com/3-4-Furniture-Grade-3-Way-Corner-PVC-Fitting-Connector-075-3W.htm)
200 (estimated) 6-8" tie-wraps
12 12-14" tie-wraps
2 large size foam pool "noodle" floats.

Instructions:
1) Cut each 10' PVC into 2 2'8" and one 4'8" piece
2) Make a rectangular frame using 4 longer pieces of PVC as verticals, shorter pieces as horizontals, and 3 way connecters.
3) Starting at top of frame, use small tie-wraps to connect net around the bottom of frame and back up the other side and back to top of frame directory across from start. Cut off excess net. Note that you'll want tie-wraps to connect every 5-6" on PVC all the way around and try to tighten net where possible.
4) Do the same for "open" remaining open area. DO NOT cut off excess net as this will become your "flexible" cover for the cage. Again, you'll want tie-wraps to connect every 5-6" on PVC all the way around and try to tighten net where possible. (NOTE: this step may require two people as it is difficult to bend the tie-wraps without someone in the cage helping.)
5) Cut each pool noodle into two pieces. Use the large tie wraps to connect each piece of pool noodle on the inside of the cage at the top.
6) Drill some holes into each piece of PVC. NOTE that this was not part of Bruce's instructions but it allows the cage to fill and sink quicker and drain quicker when you want to raise it.

Let me know if you have any questions or improvements
