Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations New silt/feeder pond

It's been a while friends but I just realized that it is much easier to add photos to posts. I am so happy about this and won't hesitate to add future photos.

Check out my silt pond that I dug in 2011 then renovated the dam and overflow when the water was down this past Summer. 8' deep, most of the water shed comes through this pond before outflow into 2.5 acre lake. That's right, I said "lake". Now I have a pond and a lake as far as I am concerned.

Stocked with FHM only in the Fall of 2011. Now it is FHM soup! It is a constant supply of FHM for my "lake". The new stream between the pond & lake is full of FHM. I can also seine them and add them directly if I choose.

This photo was taken this past Fall the day that the water reached the overflow.

Very cool, I hope to do something like that on my newly renovated pond. Do you have a valve/gate to drain from it to the lake (notice I didn't say pond)?

I appreciate your correct use of terminology Bullhead. No valve, just a gravity feed galvanized culvert. I get alot of water coming through there when it rains. There are so many FHM in there that a fairly constant supply is getting swept through. The 100' stream between the pond & Lake is full of them.

I'll have to seine some this Summer to keep them from overpopulating more than they already have.

I admire this setup. Nicely done bro. Thinking of adding any additional forage sources in the forage pond? Crays, spotfin shiners, topminnows, bluntnose minnows? Too cool - I really want to do this, too.

Hey TJ, how ya been? I would be open to suggestion but the FHM only set up allows me to seine and provide for others as well. I like crays but I already have to deal with mud chimneys more than I care for.

What about shrimp? Would a 100'X 30' X 8'D pond be big enough to make it worth the time?

That is more than enough for shrimp. You could easily add them to your forage pond, provided you have submerged vegetation, and net them periodically for stocking your main pond. Shrimp are pretty cool and will provide a good additional source of forage for you. You would need 100 to get started in your forage pond - Fattig is still in business and would appreciate the order.
