this is a 5 pounder a friend got with me today does anyone know what this is inside his mouth? Crappie or Shad?

Can't tell from the pic. You sure it's not a small LMB ?

I didnt know they would take lures if they had a tail out like that...maybe defensive strike? or can they stuff it in anyway?

The fish was just off a island and he hit a jig he also had a crawfish fall out of his mouth...could be a bass not sure

LMB, he's eating whatever comes in front of him starving to death with that fish stuck in his throat

I think it is a smaller LMB

It's a 100 acre private lake....it has bass...bluegill...crappie...shad...flathead cats and channel cats...perch...I know of a 5 pound smallmouth a few years ago but they are very rare.

AEM, stupid question but did the bass live after you caught it (I'm hoping you released it)?... I'm leaning toward a smaller perch.

Just re-read my post but just to let you know, I'm not a tree hugger or bass hugger either . Perch are a lot easier to consume than the wider types. The LMB in my pond love the perch.

Yellow perch have basically the same body shape as a same length LMB.

I won't argue with you Mr. Cody. You have way more fish and pond experience than I do!!! But I'm still learning (even a lot from you)!

I have talked to people that have caught very big perch here but we dont try for them did get one about 9 or 10 in on accident when bass fishing....we took pics and put the fish back and he swam away he seemed ok...

Here is a pic of the fish he was nice..this spot holds a lot of fish like this.

For the record, Body depth can vary based on relative weight and season. Body depth of averge weight LMB and YP are as follows:
LMB8" =1.82"; YP8" =1.77"
LMB10"=2.55"; YP10"= 2.50".
LMB12"=2.95"; YP12"= 2.91"
LMB14"=3.38"; YP14"= 3.30"
