Was planning on moving fh & gsh this weekend when iget home. But my wif e called me &said oil all over suefae of water. Pond is a 1/4 acre .dont want to siene minnows till I get rid of oil.... any suggestions. Was thinkin using rolled hay that used for erosion control. HELP... dont know if someone dumped it in or metal container was put in before we got property & finally rusted out. Havent found dead fish yet bur I dont want oil all over my new siene net.

That is strange, any chance of getting pictures? I know that in some cases rotting organics can produce an oily sheen, but not enough to cover an entire pond that I am aware of.

Your best bet to remove it may be to follow the example of oil spills where a draggable floating boom is made to pull the surface oil into one spot to where it can be pumped out somewhere safe.

if it is oil I'd look into some oil absorbent pillows or booms,if I recall 40ft of boom can be had for less then 80$.How big is the bow?

ESSHUP and I saw this post. We both think it is some kind of organic material. We both have seen various natural growth, like algae, that will look like a petroleum slick. More than likely it will go away by itself in a few days, or if it rains.

So here are some pictures of the pond. Now does this look like a natural residue from decomposition or has there been some sort of foreign substance introduced to the pond??

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't panic. I do not believe it is from any kind of spill. I'm guessing it is an algae or a bacteria, probably from iron in the water. All the experts are here at our Pond Boss conference. We should be able to get you a better answer in the morning.

Thanks to all who have commentd . Ill be home this weekend & was hoping to get fish moved to main lake before I go back on the road. But if this situatuon already has fish stressed would I be better off post poning till it clears up?.

You'll be fine stocking the fish. Just make sure you acclimate them to the water in the new pond.
