I believe we have narrowed down the search for what type of 'grass' this is to three options; but we are lost as to which one & how to remove it.

From googling images, we've come up with a close match to baby pondweed, southern naiad, and widgeon grass. Anyone know which one it could be and the best way to remove it?

Not sure if I added the picture file correctly! Here's hoping! Thanks!

See this site and compare with what you have.

Thanks! That's where I started & only managed to narrow it down to the three choices I mentioned above....but was wondering if anyone could say for sure what one it is & how to get rid of it...

If your identification is correct (any or all of the 3 listed) Reward works on all of them.

If you can get one or two strands of the weed, place it on a white background (paper plate or copy paper) and take a close up clear picture of the plant, it might help narrow it down easier.

Can not 100% identify from the pictures, but I can tell you a way I use in our area to remove something similar to it.

First you can do what is called a Winter Drawdown starting in November. Miss. State Winter Drawdown PDF link

While doing the drawdown you can make repairs or landscaping to pond. You can also do soil smaple and maybe spread lime in to get your PH balance. I would also recommend as deep in the south as you and I are if your water is clear to put in a pond dye during the draw down. This is to prevent any new aquatic growth. The March / spring storm runoff generally will fill your pond back up.
When water temps reach 60 around the first of March fertilize the pond. This will create good algea which turns the water greenish and prevents sunlight from causing more aquatic growth next year. It also provides food for fish to grow healthier.
Also add about 4 Triploid grass carp per surface acre to help with the aquatic growth.
If during the next summer you see it start to come back in any significant amount spray with Reward and add a few more Triploid grass carp.

Turneys,

I need a closer picture to be sure, but it looks like southern naid. The simplest thing to do would be to stock some grass carp. Depending on how severe the problem is you will need 7-15 per acre. There are a number of aquatic herbicides that will control it, but the water will need to warm up again in the spring for that to be considered.

Agree on the naiad. Grass carp unless you have an intensive feeding program. Diquat a good option, sonar or whitecap also a possibility depending on how often your pond volume changes, Galleon supposed to work well but I have not used it. Will have to inject subsurface with contact herbicide like diquat and like to use a sinking agent like polyan.

Just noticed this post (initiated in Oct.).
Guess I'm a contrarian to the identifications that have been offered so far.
Granted, the posted photo is lacking in clarity and detail. But some telltale traits prompted me to toss in my 2-cents.
Here's a "tweaked version" of the original photo.

I don't think the posted image is baby pondweed, southern naiad or widgeon grass. Instead, I'm guessing it's Chara - which is a higher form of algae, rather than a plant; and shown in this comparison to the original photo.

I might be wrong. But, if it is Chara, "herbicides" will prove completely ineffective.
Basically, it is necessary to first make a positive identification of the pest "weed" (maybe from a more detailed photo) before deciding which management-option makes the most sense.
