I bought some land last year with a 5 acre pond that is about 20 years old. I have been complying with pond management advice and limed it, stocked it with various bait fish, installed some structure and a fish feeder. It have removed 14 good sized turtles. I have removed a few gar but I know there are more as I've seen one rather large one and several others. Anyone got a recommendation on how to catch the gar? I've tried the trot lines; that's how I got the turtles. I've been shooting the gar whenever I see them but that's a hit or miss method:) Help!

Wish I was close enought to help - gars are a blast on a fly rod....tie a short length of small diameter nylon rope on a #2/0 hook - mark with magic marker in BG color and fray it out.... it will tangle it gar's teeth - worked for me when i fished for them - great sport fish.... grin

We got into them spawning this year on the Tennessee river below wilson Dam in 6inches to three feet of water. There were atleast two hundred long nose ranging from 3 feet to 5 or six. We cause them on frayed nylon about 8 inches long twitching it like a fluke in front of them. Tie a barrel swivel to the nylon with a zip tie and double over the nylon then fray it. They are a blast to catch. Even had two of our reels broken by them. They are an amazing fish who makes a largemouth look feel like an angry shad. an from what I hear taste really good. We didn't have a cooler long enough to keep any or I would have. You can find how to clean them in YouTube.
