I have what appears to be hundreds if not thousands of "fairy shrimp" floating on my pond. If this is what they really are, where do they come from or how would they get into my pond?
Not fairy shrimp but they are burrowing mayfly larvae; probably the genus Hexagenia and maybe the same species that poses high density problems on shorelines of Lake Erie. IF they are floating then they are the cast skins of the larvae that hatched into adult mayflies.
