Pond Boss Forums GENERAL QUESTIONS Help Moles/Voles on Dam/Grub Control?

I've searched for any threads on this subject but came up empty, so if I've missed something please let me know.

I just discovered that I've got moles or voles tunneling on one of the dams, and that usually means I've got a grub problem. In the past, I've just used a grub control, and the moles/voles would then find a new home in a short period of time. But I've never had a situation where I could have runoff into a pond, and want to see what if anything is safe to use around a pond with fish.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd be very careful applying grub pesticides anywhere near your pond for fear of damaging your aquatic ecosystem during runoff. Not sure the small holes created by voles would threaten the integrity of your dam? Other than setting traps or using bait pellets in their runs not sure there's many other safe options.

I have read somewhere castor oil works too. I wouldn't think that would hurt a pond???? Not sure

I have problems with five star moles and have had them twice now bore right through a 7 foot dike between two ponds.

I've been told to use a bait they looks like an earthworm that they eat and it kills them. I haven't done so yet.

Don't underestimate moles as they can bore 10's of feet in one day. That said, fortunately they don't bore horizontally more than 3 or 4 feet below the surface so a complete dam failure is unlikely.

Seems like they would not dig below the water line?

The two occasions I was talking about they started just above the water line on one pond and bored down at an angle to the other seven feet away. Apparently the water level came up and water went to the lower of the two ponds. I knew something was up as over night the higher pond had lowered considering.

We use the bait that looks like a nightcrawler on moles in the yard. We punch a small hole in an active run and put the worm in. No more mole. I don't know the name of this particular bait. We buy it at Farm and Fleet type of stores. Rural King in our case. Menards may also have them.
