Things have been really up and down weather wise around these parts since the beginning of March and we have been on the lookout! My question is this. We would like to try and scoop up a ribbon and place it in a fish cage to see if we can give them a fighting chance. Do we need to wait for any fertilization period? Is there a recommended way of scooping them so as not to cause any damage? I guess I have more than one question! LOL Thanks in advance!

A net works well by gently lifting up the egg ribbon under the water and feeding it into the net. Then place into a bucket of water and move where you want it to go. Most likely if the eggs are going to be fertilized by males it's already been done. From the literature I have seen several males follow the female around as she exudes her eggs. Just dip the eggs out or sweep, push, pull them into an underwater bucket, lift the bucket out and then gently pour them into the fish cage. It is best if you have a small tree branch to 'hang' drape the eggs in the cage so the ribbon gets good water circulation around and through the ribbon. The ribbon - tube is hollow.
