Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat Pond Design

Alright, Mr. Otto asked me to design my ideal pond shape and so I played around on paint to get a good shape and wanted to get ya'lls opinion. Priorities for pond are- #1 great view of natural looking pond from house, #2 Geothermal Source, #3 Fishing and wildlife, #4 swimming, #5 easy to maintain, #6 cheap to build.

Gray lines are dugout portions, yellow is filled in, and levee in black. Most of the pond follows the natural elevation. I have shallow areas where i would like to have controlled weed growth(if there is such a thing) - denoted in green and also trees to frame the pond but not block the view(from the North.)

I also placed a floating dock in the middle which just might be floating over the geothermal pipe dump. Thinking of increasing depth there from 4 ft to 8 feet.

Levee is gonna be 450 ft long- probably pretty wide to accomodate the turns in it.

2.5 acres large and the house will be due north or above the brown dock I drew in. I have a pdf of site plan but it wont let me attach it.

I think your view will be good. You will definately have a "long" view. My preference is to feel more wrapped around by the water....making the view "wider".

Deeper is better, especially if you think the water levels might fluctuate.

Okay so deeper then, I cant move the house but I might curve out the levee more on the North East side to make the pond seem wider and it would also catch more runoff. What about the controlled weed growth? Is this an option and is it wise to put one weed area in front of the levee?

Controlled weed growth is accomplished by limiting sunlight penetration, water depth, GC and chemicals. Some are more dependable than others.........

In clearer lakes, weeds can grow in depths over 10'.

Plan on building and placing cover for fish too. PVC structures, rock piles, etc. Structure in the form of underwater humps, channels, etc., will also concentrate fish populations at different times of the year.

Bob said that in a normal "fishing" BOW, cover should be approximately 20% of the surface acreage. Weeds usually don't show up for 2-4 years, and it'd hard to find suppliers of underwater weeds that are good for ponds. I'd rely on placing cover, and look at the weeds as a bonus.
