Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose When to stock new pond

We have had an unusually warm March here in northern Indiana. Last week had five consecutive days of record high temps. It's easy to start thinking spring though we all know it could turn cold again. We have a new 1/4 acre pond (dug last summer) that we will need to stock this year. I got lots of good advice in another thread (insect control) regarding what to put in. But the question now is when? Do I need to wait for a certain water temp before putting in the stock? Or is general warm weather good enough?

I stocked SMB and YP in a pond last Saturday. The water is plenty warm - Northern ponds are seeing upper water temps in the low 60's. Go for it!

The only caveat is that if you were stocking Tilapia, I think I'd still wait. I'm not sure that the water won't cool back down yet this Spring.
