Last fall, I put Walleye in my pond. I got 10"-12", but there were some that were smaller, down to 7" that I know of.
Now I'll also let it be known to any noob's, that I had never seen a walleye, till I bought these.
Tonight, I went down to my pond, and threw out some AM 500, to feed my YP. The bluegills have been feeding, along with the GSH.Water temp at 51* at the surface. I was getting ready to leave,with the sun being below the horizon. In the shallows, where the shiners were feeding, I had some type of fishes striking and breaching the water.5 or 6 would strike and breach at the same time, in a school probably 20-30 feet long.
I couldnt get a good eye on them, but appeared to be 12 - 14 inches long.
My question, what are the chances of these being Walleye hitting? Do they feed and strike in schools? I've never seen anything like this in this pond before.

I would say its possible but I do not know enough about cold water fish to be sure.

There is a good possibility that the walleye were targeting the GSH that were in the shallows feeding on the pellets. Walleye tend to school up, when you catch one you often catch others.
What other fish species are present and at what sizes in your pond?

Known species are BG, GSH,OSS,RES,GSF,WE,YP,CC.NO known Bass or Crappie. I have been on a mission to remove the CC, with taking out over 90 of them last summer.
I'm sure there are still some CC in there, but I've never seen CC hit like that.My experience with CC is they just roll for the most part. The water was FLYING!!
It was quite a sight to see. I didnt know if WE would break the water like that.

Of those, I would think it would be the walleye.

WE aren't known to be leapers, in all the WE I have caught I have never had one break the surface while fighting them. While out on the water, I have seen WE chasing baitfish in the shallows and causing a ruckus, but this is rare compared to say a species like HSB or SMB. Sounds like with the species you have present the WE feel comfortable and are really going to town in low light conditions on your forage fish.

Before I went to work tomorrow, and told everyone my WE were hitting, I wanted to make sure that's what I was seeing. I hate telling a story, only to be made a liar later.
And I'm TOTALLY tickeled I have WE that survived, and being the bully of the pond! This is going to be a great summer!

If you have a spot light. Go out when it is dark and shine the light in the water. WE eyes glow!

I have heard that. I've also heard that the light from the moon will illuminate them.Now that warmer weather seems to be here, the party is on!

Fun to light them up when they are up spawning in the creeks. The authorities don't like that too much though cause they tend to think you're poaching them...

CJ, the MDC has a catch-all law here...."molesting of wildlife". A friend of mine pulled into his own field, shined the headlights on some deer, just to look. Someone called in and the next day he had a uniformed visitor.No ticket but was informed of the molestation clause.
