Pond Boss Forums AERATION Systems questions Adding bottom aeration to pond with Fountain

Hello All - I am a new member of the community after spending the past day reading some of the valuable information here.

I have a small pond that's about 1/8th acre. It was designed as a "integrated" pond, which basically is a stormwater pond that has been landsaped into the yard. It looks like what you would see at a golf course. While its technically a stormwater retention pond, its design is limited to runoff from a private (gated) street of 7 homes. Most of the inlet comes from the rooftop drains of the 7 homes. I do have an inlet control valve that allows me to open and close the inlet. When closed, the runoff bypasses the pond and comes out at the outlet end where the pond has a swale leading to a stream.
I also have a well that's dedicated to irrigation, and I did tie a zone to the pond.
The first question - Should I typically keep the inlet control open for water to flow in and out, or closed up?

I installed an Otterbine Surface Fountain about 5 years ago, after developing a bad algae problem at the time (the pond was built new with the house 6 years ago). The otterbine quickly made a dent, and it got a bit better each year.
Im now at the point where the fountain is keeping the top clean, but the inlet area, and sections of the bottom have a LOT of sludge. The pond is about 7 feet at the deepest point.
I want to put bottom aeration, but I want to make sure it will make sense with a surface aerator, and also can I use a smaller system since I already have surface aeration? I was looking at a 1/3 Piston system that seems like it would be loud. Is that overkill for my setup? Does anyone have any recommendations?

The Eco plus 5 and 7 are linear pumps that work well for small ponds in less than 10 ft. of water.

I second what AP just said, I have the Eco plus 7 and it works great in my 1 acre pond 8 feet deep. I bet you could get by with a 5 easy with that size pond.

Thanks for the quick reply's. One question I do have is are you guys measuring pond acreage by the surface acreage or the acreage feet?
If its Acreage feet, that's closer to 1 acre. The pond holds about 300,000 gallons.

Hello Ken, the linear pumps are a high volume low pressure pump. What is the maximum depth and lenght of tubing you would be needing. Anything ove 8' and 400' of line will be too much for those type of compressors and you will need to look at a rocking or wobl piston compressor.

I shut off my winter aeration today. Little or no ice makes it not necessary. I could have probably done it a week ago but just kept forgetting about it.

I use my Echo 7 at a average depth of 12 ft and it runs 3 nine inch discs great. When the water gets to flood stage 15-17ft only 2 discs run. When I move the diffuser to 6ft in the winter I cant say I notice the boil looking any faster then at 12. This spring I am planning on adding another unit and manifold them together for my RAS tanks.

Hey Cody good to hear your Eco 7 is working good! Mine is as well. I don't have mine on now, but turn it on every couple of weeks for a minute or so just to make sure all it working right. Going on my 3rd year with this setup and I am very happy with it. I think this year I will try and run it 12 hours a day and see how it goes.

I like to keep a hole in the ice open, walk down and try for a few trout once in awhile. This is my first year running it in the winter. It could be my imagination or the warmer then usuall winter, but it seems like the leaves are breaking down much faster then before.
