Looks like you folks on the East coast are in for a bumpy weekend. Batten down the hatches and stay safe.

Earlier in the week I was very worried. Initial forecasts were calling for hurricane force winds far inland, even where I live and rains perhaps topping 20". Now the hurricane seems to be tracking further and further east with every new update. It seemed like Irene was going to be another Hazel, now it seems like it's gonna skim the coast but barely make land fall. Long Island, NY may get the worst of it.

Be prepared ! Flooding is the biggest killer in hurricanes. Unfortunately some people take stupid risks and cause others like CJ to have to risk their lives to bail them out. Take care , be smart and God's speed to all that may be effected.

Update :

Center fixes from the aircraft overnight and this morning indicate
that the expected north-northwestward turn has occurred. A
northward turn is expected tonight or early Friday as Irene moves
through a break in the subtropical ridge. A mid/upper-level trough
moving through the Great Lakes region is expected to then turn
Irene toward the north-northeast in a couple of days. This trough
is forecast to bypass Irene...leaving the hurricane in deep
southerly flow between a trough over the central United States and
a building ridge over the Atlantic. This pattern will likely keep
the hurricane very near the East Coast of the United States. The
guidance envelope has shifted a little westward on this cycle...and
the new official track has been nudged west as well. The new
forecast lies between the GFS and ECMWF...and is a little right of
the tvca consensus. Since Irene is such a large tropical
cyclone...significant impacts are likely along the United States
East Coast regardless of the exact track it takes.

I think Texas could have used at least a tropical depression and the rain that comes with it. I will keep my thoughts on you down there and in GA too.

I'm so nuts I volunteered to work OT and come into work this weekend. Should be a fun one!

With children involved, we have evacuated many times, usually to Texas, and have always experienced heartwarming kindnesses from all who learned that we were evacuees.
Surely, it is difficult for management, but La Quinta even welcomed our pets.

CJ, bank it while you can. You might need outriggers for your work vehicle, it looks like Irene is tracking a bit further West than expected earlier today. DC and NYC is projected to take a direct hit.

I'm gonna be night shift, 1930-0700... My dad is staying at his place on the Chesapeake Bay and the in-laws just north or Myrtle Beach are still pondering heading in land.

What are they predicting for storm surge?

They just said on the news, about 10-15 feet.

Im about 60 miles from Philly. Guess I will get to see if my new overflow pipe can handle it. Spent the last 2 days cleaning out my stormwater drain and put new rock in.

When hurricanes are to your east, not so bad. If near dead center or to your immediate west, best to get out of the way.

I still think this hurricane is gonna curve eastward at the last moment and spare much of the New England a major hammering. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking! My dad has his truck loaded full of the valuables in case the storm surge is higher than expected and they decide to flee. For now they are gonna hold tight to man the generators and keep their freezers from going hot. When the tropical storm came through a few years back, they were without power for 11 days. I can only imagine how bad this one will be. I just hope the hurricane stays at least as far east as they are predicting and hopefully much more!

That's why Mom & Dad went with a propane powered generator. They can last a long while - their supply always bounces between 800 and 1600 gallons on hand at one time. (two 1,000 gallon tanks) Their generator is a auto-on model, enough to power the whole house.

I grew up in NJ and go to the beach every summer. My parents have a house on a barrier island off of NJ. I do not have a good feeling about this storm....

It seems to be brutality rising.

Traffic jams and low gas supplies have started. Hang in there guys.

My dad has a pretty big diesel generator and I believe a 150 gallon tank, so he should be good in that area. His concern is they're expecting the peak to be at high tide. His house is only 75 feet from water's edge, so it may get ugly... He said the water is already over his sea wall because the strong north winds won't let the water recede. Only time will tell now...

It seems so strange that we are only expecting high clouds and moderately gusty winds here late tomorrow night and Sunday morning. They don't expect much of anything to pass over the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 20-25 miles east of me.

Earlier this evening, they shut down a lot of transportation corridors east, south, and north of us, while we enjoyed an incredibly beautiful day and evening.

I don't think I've never seen "typhoon" warnings before, but that is what they have 40-50 miles east of me, and beyond to the Atlantic -- like where CJBS patrols. Stay safe my friend.
