I am a newbie to this site and ponds. We just purchased a beautiful home in northwest ohio (Defiance County) with a 1/2 acre pond. The house water comes from the pond through numerous filters. What can be used that is safe for water treatment? I recently stocked it as it was not maintained for three years. We saw koi, and bluegill. We put in 10 6" perch, 10 6" hybrid bass, 10 4" channel cats and 10 pounds of minnows. I installed an aerator in the center 2 months ago. There is NO vegetation as the prior owner preferred none and used copper sulfate and aquashade? There is no inlet feed and there is an overlow. I have a problem with thge water being cloudy, I set a glass of water in the house from the pond and there was sediment but it was still cloudy. We can only see about 4 inches deep. My father-in-laws pond you can see several feet deep. Any help appreciated.

Welcome Doc! Those perch (bluegill?) stocking numbers are far below what is usually suggested. It's usually recommended to stock anywhere from 300-500 per acre depending on your goals. By hybrid bass, do you mean hybrid striped bass? Those are a great addition to any body of water in my opinion. Are you planning on adding largemouth bass in the future?

I have caught some 12 and 16 inch largemouth, I was not sure of the fish population when we bought the place so I didn't want to overstock. Any ideas on the turbidity?

Doc, was the pond turbid before you installed the aeration system?

a little, not as bad. It has been just over a month since installed it. What concerns me is I bring a glass of the pond water in and set it on the shelf, two days later there is sediment but still quite cloudy.

When you placed the diffuser in the pond, did it have something on it to hold it up off the pond bottom, or something under it to prevent the upwelling of water stirring up the sediment near the diffuser?

Just the plastic and weighted support, I was thinking of putting blocks under it, should I?

If you think it might be a source of the suspended particles, it sure wouldn't hurt!
