Well I'm certainly no expert but my first thought would be "inappropriate" contact with an "unclean" LMB and failure to use a pondom.
But hang on for a real opinion.

This looks like quite a "Nest-Warrior" to me. You will see this quite often in the spring before and during spawning season. The males will construct a nest by clearing debris and dirt from the bottom of the pond/lake with their tail. This dude must have consructed quite a nest to impress the ladies!
