Rainman and others suggested I beef up my bluegill and minnow allocation in my 1 acre pond before introducing bass, so I am in the process of ordering fish for delivery next week. Here's my question:
I am going to add another 200 bluegill and the fish farm suggested I might want to consider adding coppernose bluegill. He says they grow a little bigger than standard bluegills and would make for a nice mix with the standard bluegill and redear I've already stocked. My question is will they survive as well in colder climates like mid-Missouri, or are they more of a southern fish? I've read stuff all over the board, but I'd really like to hear from somebody who has actually stocked them in a colder climate (mid-missouri or further north) and hear about your experience. Thanks

I assume you have read the info on the forum.

Greg Grimes IIRC stocked some in KY with bad results. I have lost some before in central MS. With all the hatcheries in Ark I know they loose some CNBG on a regular basis. Its not just a question of will they die during winter but also even if they live will they grow well.

That's a question you should ask rainman.. He'll get ya taken care of.. I'm around St.Louis and I was told don't stock them..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

ewest...
Yeah, the stockfarm I talked to is located in Arkansas...of course they told me they have good results with the coppernose and I shouldn't have any problem, but their job obviously is to sell fish and I'm not sure they stock anything but hybrids and coppernose. I'll wait to hear from Rainman...thanks to you and Bluegillerkiller for your input.

git1fiddle, I like the CNBG/BG crosses that comeout of Arkansas and have stocked a lot of them. They do pretty well south of a Memphis-Little Rock-Oklahoma City line...They will NOT live through even a fairly mild winter in Callaway County...I wish they would. My personal pond is in Texas County and 3 stocking have all resuted in no survivors.
