Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Selecting a site building a pond / pumping water

I have 5 acres. In this 5 acres I have an area that is about 1 acre that I would like to build a pond in the middle of it. Maybe 1/5 acre in size (approx 150'x 50' x 10' deep). My land is flat farm land. No real drainage or anything that I can take advantage of to catch water.

My neighbor has a irrigation well that they use for their farm. I am thinking I can buy water from them to initially fill up the pond (running a temporary pipe 1/4 mile from the well to my pond).

I have a small low spot on my property that fills up maybe 6" deep after a rain and it will hold this water for about a week. I assume I am going to need to add bentonite or a liner to the pond?

My main concern is going to be keeping the pond full. My neigbors well can do the initial pumping, but will my household well be able to keep it full? If it is sealed good what kind of water loss am I going to have due to evaporation?

Based on your estimated size, the volume of water in your pond will be 561,000 gallons. If you have good clay and use it to cover the pond bottom, then the pond should hold water without the need of a liner or bentonite.

Depending on where you live, your rainfall rates, and the amount of sunshine which drives evaporation rates, you may or may not need your household well to keep it full. In all probability, you will need the household well only in dry summer months of August and maybe July....and then only to keep it full. If you are willing to accept some fluctuation in water depths in summer, again depending on those other factors mentioned, you may not even need the household well.
