The top photo resembles Chara (an algae). But, the bottom photo somewhat contradicts my initial hunch. A sharply focused close-up photo of a single strand held in your hand, or against a contrasting backgroundm would be most helpful. Also, does the stuff smell musky (skunky) when crushed in your hand?

I agree, the top does look like Chara, but the bottom pic looks more characteristic of a "Pondweed" sago perhaps, but you really need a better pic to be sure.

BH, see if you can get a single strand on a white background, like laying it on a sheet of computer paper. That way it'll be easier to tell if the leaves are alternate or opposite, and give a better idea of the stem structure. Something like the pictures in this thread and it's nice to have something in there of a known size, like the quarter.
