Stocked my 1ac pond two weeks ago tomorrow with 30# FH minnows, 200 RE's, 400 cc's, and 500 HBG. Started feeding with auto feeder 7am and 5pm for two seconds bc I didn't see any activity. Still don't. Floating food.
The pond is a new pond with habitat, filled with runoff approximately 5 weeks ago. Water is not muddy, but brown tint like iced tea, otherwise clear.
My question is did I buy stupid fish or what is going on here. I don't see any evidence of dead fish. I added fertilize on Sunday- about 5#.

1] What kind of food?
2] Almost certainly, they'll figure it out; took mine 6 weeks after I started feeding, and 9 weeks later, they're still learning. How big were your stockers?

hi cw, here's my humble opinion.
if you didnt see it on one of my other posts, i'll repeat it (told to me by a veteran fish farmer) "putting a few hundred fish in a 1 acre pond and throwing out some food for them is like putting a flake of hay on a thousand acres with only one steer walking around"
IOW, try feeding by hand first, in the same place, at the same time of day until the fish figure out its food this strange two legged creature is giving them. probably would help to make a loud repetitous sound like hitting a metal stake in the ground a few times every time before trying to feed. once you get a few, the rest will learn quickly, then turn yer feeder back on.
good luck

It took our fish 2 months to get used to us feeding them. They now know when they hear us walking on the dock that they just might get fed. Not sure who is training who!

Craig, look for the places that would actually hold fish and go there. When starting out, it is easier to go to them than have them come to you.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

They are there. This place is full of negatives I have been a member since 02 and everything seems to be wait and it will turn out bad. Take my word for it they are there just be patient and have fun with it over the next few years Mother Nature is a wonderful thing. If you did your homework it will wor out and fish will be everywhere. Dont let some on here bring you down. One guy says take care of your pond and the fish will be fine. Amen to that I have had mine for 5 years everything is great. Dont let em talk you into things. Remember mother nature has a way.

If I had to guess, this is what bc is referring to: http://www.pondboss.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=004257 Just some hard prose, point blank, commentary from the man.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Communicating is difficult, more so on an internet forum. OSISTM (or so it seems to me)
