I have a 1 1/2 acre pond that came with the 23 acres that my wife and I just purchased in Middle Ga.

Currently, overflow from the pond drains out into what I call a "finger" into the woods. This finger is simply a section of the pond near one end where the pond narrows. The end of the finger nearest the pond is about 15 ft wide and then it extends towards the woods becoming more narrow along its 100 ft length until it drains into a 15inch wide ditch that goes into a low spot in the woods.

I am not crazy about the appearance of the finger because in dry periods the narrow end of the finger begins to dry up and it starts getting weeds, etc and generally doesn't look good to me.

My idea is this - Could I simply install a concrete pipe or some type of square concrete structure that has a pipe in the bottom that lays in the bottom of and extends the length of the finger. I would place this structure near the wide end of the finger and then, I would cover up the pipe that runs along the bottom of the finger towards the woods. The top of the pipe would be set at the water level I want to maintain the pond at and if we got a lot of rain, excess water would spill into the concrete structure and pass through the burried pipe into the woods.

Can someone tell me if this is feasible? Would I have to worry about the submerged pipe filling with sediment over time?

Thanks for your thoughts.

it would really help to know how much watershed your pond catches in determing pipe size and feasabilty. i can see 3 or 4 ways to do away with the finger. like you described or dam at head of finger and cut to drain to existing ditch this would reduce length of pipe or dig finger deeper to do away with shallow water etc. no bigger than the finger is some of these could be a cheaper fix than a lot of large diameter pipe. i read your post again and it must not have much watershed or this finger would be washed out unless there is rock in it. some of the other things i mentioned would still shorten the pipe and make it possibly cheaper
