Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Creating the food chain Threadfin in northern ponds

Has anyone ever stocked threadfin in a northern pond? I live in NJ and fish in places that have shad. I am not sure if the migrate here or what but they are in the river. My question is does anyone stock threadfin knowing that they will die off in the winter? I was thinkig you could stock them in the spring, get a spawn or two out of them then the die off to become catfish food. Is this not a good idea?

Quite common around the country also with talipia. Cost may be an issue. Might think about alewives.

I work in Nebraska and bring up threadfin shad every spring to a couple of lakes in the Kansas City, Kansas region. Depending on the spring, we have been able to put the shad in about the first week in May. 2000 adults turn into hundreds of thousands of yoy's by Sept. At what point in the spring is your water temp consistently over 60?

I am not sure. I guess april. It varies every year. Do the shad die off every year? I guess you could stock 500 in a small pond then have them reproduce until they die off and become channel cat food.

Why not just go with gizzard shad. They are very hardy. Just make sure you have enough adult bass to keep their numbers down. If overpopulation is a concern, because of lack of predation, the threadfin shad idea could work. It probably will be a continous cycle, though.

if you live in new jersey you've fished rivers with gizzard shad and alewives. there are no threadfin shad in new jersey
