I'm getting ready to head up to the parent's place in Northern Wisconsin for the 4th of July weekend. Musky were all over the place when I was fishing for bass back in late May, so I'm hoping for a good Esox season. I have been bending some bucktails in anticipation and thought that pond boss should see how we do it in Minnesota/Wisconsin.  Top is about 9.25", ~1.3 ounces, double #8 chartreuse indiana blades, 4/0 treble, magnum flashabou + black buck tail. Bottom is about 8.5", ~1 ounce, double #7 gold-hammered indiana blades, 4/0 treble, magnum flashabou tail. Bending my own saves a lot, I can make them in about thirty minutes for under $10. These would cost $15 and up in stores. I need to get a few large colorado blades in chartreuse or fluorescent orange and make up some >11" single blade night fishing bucktails.

Nice looking bucktails... I have seen ones that look similar for sale on eBay and you are right, making them yourself does save some cash. Let me know how the night bite is. That is my favorite time to fish for musky and bass. Try all black blades and skirts, killer at night!

How is your wrist after throwing those for 4-5 hours? I have noticed a trend towards those large blade baits for musky. Do you prefer a short rod or long rod for tossing them?

These are not mine, but sure wish they were. They are a fellow's on a woodworking forum I frequent. Once I get room in the garage for a wood lathe gonna try my hand at making some of these. Already have a few good scraps for the day I can.

Jeesh, nicely done TXelen. I bet those double cowbells will take a few musky - don't forget a trailer hook and hold on!

It's surprisingly easy to do this for a long period. If I burned over shallow weeds constantly I would get sore, but I'm always mixing it up by running at different depths and speeds, switching lures, using topwaters, etc. I use a 7'9" heavy, fast action rod paired with an Abu-Garcia 5501c3 reel. A long rod helps throw the bait a good distance, but almost more importantly allows the fisherman to make a nice figure-8 at the end to catch any following Musky. These bucktails are small compared to some of the ones a lot of guys throw. 12 inch, 3 ounce, bucktails with twin #10 colorado blades are common for a lot of the people fishing in Minnesota. Lures like that require a pretty serious reel (Daiwa Saltist or such), running them with most reels wears gears out after a season. Many fishermen also use 8-9 foot rods.
