What is this?
It is taking over my small pond. How do I control it? I have catfish in there and cattle use it.

Kinda looks a little like water primrose too. What color is it when it blooms? Either way I think that Navigate would take care of it. Its a granualar 2-4(D). If it were me I would just use a ester based 2-4(D) but try not to get much in the water. The experts may have something different to say about that though because I don't think 2-4(d) in the liquid form if good for ponds.

I wish I could remember what the color of the blooms are/were the last time they bloomed. I was hoping they would really die back with the hard freezes we had over the winter. Is there a fish that will eat this stuff?

Knotweed/smartweed has reddish watermarks on the leaves with the roots forming rhizomes. The seeds require a cold winter to come out of dormancy and if you dredge/till the dirt in the spring, it will cause them to trigger germination. It can also spread by fragmentation of the root structures.
Grass carp won't eat it since it has a woody stem.
You can cut it (I always recommend the Lake Mower, I use it and stand by it) or use herbicide.
If at first you don't succeed...look in the trash for the directions.

Just kidding! Hey - I thought the same thing when I saw the little thumbnail image. Honestly, I have found it growing in the wild here twice in thirty years and both times reported to the USDA like a good citizen.

It's smartweed....
It's a great waterfowl food plant. Good seed production and the invertebrates love it when it breaks down in cold weather.

Just kidding! Hey - I thought the same thing when I saw the little thumbnail image. Honestly, I have found it growing in the wild here twice in thirty years and both times reported to the USDA like a good citizen. Actually in the thumbnail it looked like the cornfield across the highway from me!

See, Cecil? You were right! Duckdude confirms it! Did you guys know that marijuana is a good food plant for upland game? On another note one summer as a biologist aid the other biologist aid was planting it's seeds on the state hatchery property! What a bonehead this kid was!
