This has got to be way too early, but the SMB that resides under our dock has a huge mess of fry! May 24th seems way too early, but the surface temps in the pond are 67 to 68 degrees F.
The LMB are busy on beds and so are the RES and RB, but so far, nothing is happening with them.

Sure is nice to see! The SMB spawned last year, but no survivors to be seen this year. I only have a single pair, so I hope a few survive this year.

Exciting news, rattletrap! They are so cool -- pitch black little guys.

Do you have rock in your pond? Usually the males will guard the school of fry for a little while, but then the little guys like to disperse into some rocky habitat to hide from the predators. Maybe you know all this already??

Thanks Dave!
Actually, I know very little (well, about ponds and fish spawning anyways! LOL) but yes, we have some rip rap around this part of the pond and under this dock. This is the exact spot he used last year to build the nest as well. I guess he feels that he only has three sides to protect and there is the rock gravel as well?

It would be nice to get a few survivors. This large male is getting old looking. Long, but very lean.

Yes, they are pitch black in colour. I'm only guessing, but I would estimate several hundred or so.

Sunil, yes it is a nice feeling. I feel like a GrandPappy! My Daughters think I'm nuts!
