There is a decent sized stream near my house. It has bluegill, RES, maybe craws, ect... I want to widen and deepen it and build like a mini pond connected to it so I can catch bigger fish. The best part about this place is its in the middle of no where so nobody else will fish it. So I can raise some big fish. My question(s) are: Is it worth all the work? Will the fish stay?
The stream is around .5 to 3 ft deep average. Its about 10ft wide and has a moderate current. The stream dumps out into golfcourse ponds BUT the golfcourse ponds are about 1/2 a mile downstream. Upstream is just woods.
I was thinking about digging a decent sized rectangle and connecting it to the stream and making it 3-4 ft deep and adding cover. Then buying FHM and Crawfish to start the foodchain. Maybe throw in 5 baby bass or so.

Could you dig the pond off to the side of the stream, then use the stream to fill the pond? With the stream running into the pond, it could bring fish that you don't want in the pond, brng a lot of sediment that will fill the pond relatively quickly, and potentially wash out the fish in a high water event.
If the pond if off to the side of the stream, you still could transfer some fish to the pond.

That sounds like the best way to do it, but I would make the connection so it angles from down stream back to your dug pond this way silt will not come in to your pond. You could put a screen in the connection to the stream to help keep out most fish and to keep your fish in, also make the pond 6ft or deeper if possible.
