Pond Boss Forums AQUATIC VEGETATION Controlling unwanted plants Pond weeds???

What kind of weeds are these? I think this year they have started covering more of the pond than ever, most of the time the ducks will eat most of it out during the winter. They did not show up this year.

My plan is to put in 5 Grass Carp and tilapia in as soon as I can get them. I sent in for the permit for the GC last week.

Will the Tilapia and the GC keep this under control? My pond is about .75 acres and it will be unfishable later in the summer if I don't get this under control. I really don't want to use chemicals and really like to do it in more of a natural way. Also, I am working on my Bass overcrowded problem as well.

Looks like Coontail or Eur Milfoil to me. A better way to identify it is take a small piece out and lay it on a blank piece of white paper, get a close up photo. I have a brand new customer with same problem. Either hitchhiked with a fish delivery or a aquarium dump. Probably going mechanical cut and carp at first.

Bear in mind there have been a few threads lately where people have had less than desirable results with grass carp. It is iffy at best.

Picture 5 has what looks to be American pondweed in it. Those are the long oval shaped floating leaves. Could you perhaps pull some of the weeds out of the water and take a more close up picture of them? That would really help with an accurate ID...

Here you go, just pulled them a few minutes ago. Lucky the pond is in my back yard. It is kinda bright outside I hope these pics are good enough.

By the way, the green leafy stuf is a different plant. I don't have a whole lot of that stuff in the pond. The weeds I took a pic of is everywhere.

Boy, that didn't help much. Looks like something dead and ready to decompose. But even at that, the stems look wrong for coontail/milfoil. Looking more like Naiads from that photo.

I agree, it does look like Southern Naiads. Don't see that in my jurisdiction but I think you ID'd it.

I was thinking Sago, but I'm pretty sure LeeBass nailed it, as did CJ on the floating green leaves.

if I was betting man give 10 to 1 odds on potomogeton nodosus. filet mignon on the menu for grass carp.

Do you think between the GC and Talipia will keep this in check? I know the ducks love this stuff.

5 is a low # so by themselves maybe not btu they love this stuff so maybe. Tilapia no idea if they like potomo or not. some of this of course if good for fish cover/production.

Greg, you're talking about the green leafy floating plant, right? What about the brown one with very thin stalks/leaves?

That is one reason I don't want the chemicals, this stuff makes great cover. Too much and you can't fish anymore. Just want a good balance.

Too many bass in heavy weeds? I would go to one of many scum type frogs. The good ones are designed to collapse on a strike and are pretty positive hooking for slop baits. They are butt weighted so you can toss them on medium-heavy to heavy tackle, and wind those bass out of the weeds and into the hot oil.

I stocked 15 pounds of talipia yesterday, I was really suprised they went right to work eating the grass. I will see how well they keep the grass down the next few weeks.
