Pond Boss Forums MANAGING AN EXISTING POND Feeding I'm not getting this

I threw out some Aqua Max 500 today (left over from last year) and as they have been for several days, the BG and CC were chowing on it. Suddenly, I saw a Bass come up and take the pellets. Probably 3 pounder or so, it's the first time I've ever seen a LMB take pellets in this pond but why ? He was surrounded by Bluegill of all sizes, why would he take a little AM500 pellet ??

Easy to fill his belly fast Little effert. My LMB have learned the same. The biggest is I will get is about 2 to 3 lbs. I guess big ones want a real dinner. As They get older they will want real food.

As there were many 3-4 inch BG within 6"-12" of him, it seems the same amount of energy would have been extended and a much better meal at the end...guess I don't think like a Bass though. The same thing went on tonight as well...literally swimming right past the BG to get a little pellet.

It may be that bass are still somewhat slow as water is just warming where as BG may get going at slightly lower temperature.

SK63, that has been an issue with me too, ever since this pond was stocked 2 yrs. ago. I think is has to do with the high protein of AQ max and they know the BG will always be there. Just a few pellets=1 3" bg in food value. They also dont have to expend any energy for a pellet. Even I know to get in the longest line at the BBQ cookoff. Hopefully as the larger BG start hitting the feed heavier, the bass will go after the BG more. I have never observed the bass in a predatory behavior around the feeder. It seems they like to hem the BG up in shallow water before attacking. throw some pellets near shore and watch what happens.
