How do you get the BG to start feeding on the surface? I figured it wouldn't be difficult, I'd just toss out some bread to get them started then replace it with feed.
I can't get the BG to come to the surface to eat the bread...
I can see them just under the surface but they won't rise to the top.

That's kind of unusual. If they were hatchery raised fish, they ought to feed conditioned but maybe aren't used to bread. I can toss pellets in my creek and wild fish come to them.
Try pellets instead of bread.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Repeated feeding attempts at regular location(s) and regular times may be needed before Bg show up to eat. If they have plenty of natural food to eat, they may not be real intersted. It took mine a couple of years.

try late in the evening that seems to be the time they are feeding in my pond here in south Texas. I added two hola hoop tied together. Feed in hoop they started come there first. then added the feeder. Just what I done, which really not much of a statement.

What is your water temp? Perhaps they just aren't eating much yet this year.

Now I Think your on to something. It near 65 degrees lately and now that I think about it. When the weather got above 60 to 65 they started hitting the feed. didn't do much in the cooler weather. near seventy now they eat twice aday 10:00am and 6:00PM

Thanks guys, I'll try some pellets and see how they respond. I was able to get some of the YOY to feed on bread last fall if it was sinking but they wouldn't come to the surface to feed.

There was a group of 9 or 10 BG in the 4"-6" size this evening that I tried to get to eat some bread. They wouldn't come to the surface so I pack some pieces and let them sink slowly. The BG would swim up and take the bread the spit it out... never seen BG turn down bread, they must not like "Wonder."

Layne, try breaking up the pellets, then they will sink, and the BG will surely hit them on the way down. Soon, they hit on the surface
Just do it...
