Pond Boss Forums MANAGING AN EXISTING POND Evaluating and adjusting fish populations Still have Crappie

Did a little fishing today, still catching those Crappie I've been trying to rid, they are all the same size so I'm assuming there is still a healthy population of them. Any tricks on how to pound them hard and get them out via fishing ? I haven't done much Crappie fishing.

Kelli, the 95 Lb black Lab I'm fostering, thought Crappie fishing is fun. She came in to the shelter at 106 Lbs and needed some 30-40 lbs off before we could adopt her out, I've got her down to 95 in about a month and a half....still got a ways to go though.

Is this the pond you were going to fill in? Still wet, I take it?

Fyke nets or cages work well for trapping crappie. Otherwise management via angling will work all year with jigs or cork and bobber.

I decided to give it one more summer and see how it looks then make a decision early fall.

Good for you. Any way to divert some of the neighborhood runoff and the high nutrients? Is aeration making any progress? Wonder what would happen if someone bucket stocked some tilapia in the pond?

A diversion ditch or piping would be a great remedy but as they say "it's all about money". I'm still in discussions with various people about this pond, all of whom are about as interested in my pond as a mouse is interested in being in a snake pit.

Ditch witch or skidloader around here costs around $50/day to rent. Even if it's a crude berm or ditch, it still would go a long ways to helping reduce your nutrient loads, and algae blooms, etc. Worth considering...I rented a skidloader for a week and moved 80T of limestone, built four berms, and almost killed myself three times while learning how to operate the thing on the job.
