Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose how many LMB & HSB

I have a 3/4 acre to 1 acre pond (excatation pond) deep down to 24 ft steep sides. So far I have put 1000 gambusia, 500 BG with 25% being RES. 100 CC. They were put in the pond in May 07. This next sring of 08' I want to put some HSB, and LMB. And I was thinking of getting some Golden Shiners from Andersons (250,000 FRY) I would like to put the GS fry in April and follow up with the bass in May. I am thinking 50HSB and 25LMB. What do ya think?
I was thinking of just a BG, HSB only pond. But I don't think I could live without atleast a few LMB. When it is time to restock the HSB I am thinking of raising some in a cage untill they are big enough to release into the pond. Has any one else tried to raise them in a cage?

I like your 50 HSB and 25 LMB. Regarding the cage, you might have to grow them pretty large to escape predation. Without an awful big cage, that would be tough.

You can easily grow 25 LMB from 3"-4" long to 6"-8" long in a cylindrical cage 3 ft in dia and 3.5 ft deep. Plan on 85%-90% survival of stocked fish. As Theo says, see Bill Cody's articles in the 3 PB mags.

GW - I have a neighbor that back in May built a fish cage (1/2 mesh, 34" in diameter and internal volume of 21.5 cu ft) as per my instructions in Mar-Apr PBoss Mag. As a novice and first time fish cage raiser he put 70 YP 3"-7" long in the cage. Currently YP are doing just great, all feeding well and growing. Feed trained fingerling LMB would be easier to raise than the untrained perch caught from the pond. In Part II of the "fish in a cage raising article", I note that the difficulty factor of raising LMB and yellow perch are very similar. John G should not have a problem raising 25 fingerling LMB in a cage using LMB that have been fed trained. His biggest problem will be feeding them 5-7 times a week.

I donot want to raise LMB, I want to stock both LMB and HSB in the spring. But, in a year or so, when it is time to restock some HSB I will need to raise them up big enough to keep from being eaten by the LMB that will already be in the pond. I do not have acsess to a grow out pond or to advanced size HSB. I was just wondering how hard it is to raise HSB in a cage. Thanks, John
