I enjoyed meeting a lot of you at the seminar. 'Outstanding folks with outstanding information'. I really learned a lot. After I got home I started playing around with some stuff and came up with a homemade secchi. It cost me about $4 to put together. I wanted a pole so I don't have to do much bending over and I color coded the pole for ease of visibility, instead of looking at tiny numbers. Each wood-colored and white band is 3 inches. There is a red band at 12 inches, green bands at 18 and 24 inches, and another red band at 36 inches.    This should make it easy to get the readings.
I started with nothing, and still have most of it.

Ok there you go making my discount of Zsd at bargain price of $15 seem high. Seriously good job I like it. For those of us using one on mutiple ponds that woould be a little tough on transport.

cmf- I like it for fertile waters, although for clear waters it will need a cord attached. A good way to mark distance on a rope or cord is to sew or tie colored yarn on rope at the appropriate depths. For deeper depths I use 1 foot increments, then estimate inches between 1 ft marks. Visibilities in my region often range from 4ft to 12ft.

CMF,
Why do you have an wooden floor on the bottom of your pond and how did you get your water so clear?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I use swimming pool chemicals and a wood bottom is easier to walk on!  I hope I won't need it any longer than 3 feet when I start fertilizing. Right now the clarity is a little over 3 feet and that's too much.
