Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat Metal structures in pond.

I've got some interesting metal relics (i.e., junk) left on the property near my pond that I'm considering relocating to the bottom of the pond before I flood it. These range from the amusing (a mailbox stuck in concrete in an old milk can) to the unusual (chevy engine and a very large old dredge) and from large (an engine hoist) to small (variety of farm and auto implements). I'm thinking it might be humorous to have one or two of these somewhere where they could be seen from the shore (anticipating fairly high clarity). If I can only figure out a way to get the feed to show up directly in the mailbox . . . .

My question is whether there is any meaningful risk of metal somehow contaminating the water. My pond has a pretty good flow into it, but I'm nonetheless curious if there is a risk of common metals accumulating in fish or otherwise causing problems. I definitely don't want to try to get that dredge out of the bottom after it fills.

IMHO plain old steel doesn't pose much if any risk to water quality. I would be leery of anything (formerly) containing oils, greases, or other chemicals like antifreeze (and am, which is why I still have an old cornpicker and an old disk harrow sitting around above water).

I agree. Be sure its not copper as that could cause some minor problems.

The farm implements, dredge, and engine hoist may have a considerable value on ebay!
