Hey guys, if you want your wives and daughters to fish with you � teach them to fly fish�
Tom G. was an excellent student and caught on quickly, but his wife picked up a fly rod for the first time in her life and cast like a veteran.

10 to 2, 10 to 2...

I have been a Fly Fishing guide for almost 20 years now and can tell you a few things that will almost always make a women, a quicker learner then men when it comes to casting the log rod.

Less power, more finesse
Better listeners
Actually do what you tell them to
Dont already have a ton of bad casting habits
Dont have the " I paid for your time, but refuse to listen to you " attitude

I could go on and on, but Ill take a female "every" time over a male, no matter how much experience they have... ;^)
Long live the long Rod!!

PS the 10-2 is an older method , it works but the newer methodologies are better when it comes to the timing of the cast.

George,thanks for spending the time with us this afternoon.My wife MADE me go by Gander Mountian on our way home and buy her a new flycasting rod.I told her what you said and where we were supposed to buy em,but do women ever listen? Nnooooo.Cost me a 100 bucks.And I still have to order the other stuff.

Mark B. is correct - 10-2 is way out of date.
The movie "A River Runs Through It" made flyfishing popular but gave a lot of folks the wrong ideas by making it look complicated.

It's just another fun way to catch a fish.

I took up fly fishing about 8 years ago. I think fishing with long telescoping "cane" poles as a kid sure helped out with the timing and soft presentation.

All my fishing is done with roll casts cause I never have any room behind me. So I don't get to look all pretty when I fly fish. I'm completely self taught. Somehow my fly lands where I want it to and I catch fish. All that matters I suppose, I aint out there trying to look perty.

I agree on all counts - the roll cast is easy to learn and versatle cast for many situations.
I use it to "roll" a sinking shooting head beyong the rod tip, before "launching" - it aint purty but it works.
Very useful for striped bass and salty critters....

I should have started Tom with that cast yesterday but not enough time - maybe next time school is in session...

Dont cut yourself short George,Im gonna do my best to impress you the next time we meet.You got me and my wife sarted,and interested,and I think its going to blossom into even more time spent fishing together,which is a good thing.(If she doesnt wind up shoving me in the pond!).
Also,do they make smaller flyrods for kids?Im sure a couple of my grandkids will be interested in learning this as well.

Tom there are 6ft and 7�6� rods on the market in 2 and 3 weight that would be perfect for kid�s �brim� fishin�.

I have the Lefty fly fishing video and really like it. Fly fishing lessons from George and Brandon really got JWHAP and I excited about fly fishing though. Brandon taught Fatty, JWHAP and I the double haul in a matter of minutes.

Things I have learned about fly fishing:

1. It is incredibly fun to catch a fish on a fly rod.

2. You can practice a technique (like double haul) all you want in an open field (or in the case of the 2008 PB Conference, in the hall of the conference center) but when you get to the pond with lots of trees and brush and wind things become much more complicated.

3. It is a very fun alternative way to fish to help mix things up.

4. It doesn't have to be elitist (as was suggested in a River Runs Through It). You can get moderately priced equipment, learn a few techniques and have a fantastic time. That is something DIED taught me.

I don't thing I ever mentioned it to DIED but the very first fish I EVER caught on my own fly rod was at his pond. We had so very much fun one afternoon on his pond fly fishing for sunfish. Great memories.

One of my 2009 goals is to fly fish on my pond much more often. We are going to mow around our pond a little differently (more extensively around a flatter area) just to give us more fly fishing area.

We had a lot of fun yesterday at our PB TexMex grub fest in Ft. Worth, and of course the subject of ponds was the major topic of conversation, and to a man � fishin� our ponds.

Since Tom and his wife are very interesting in fly fishing, the subject strayed to fly fishing and casting lessons � not in place of conventional fishing, but in addition to.

Someone suggested our next get-together in Ft. Worth be on a Friday and maybe some of the guys on lunch break could plan an extra hour or so to join in on fly-casting lessons.

The thought crossed my mind, why not a session for PB�ers in North Texas that are interested in fly fishing their ponds, forming local groups for lunch and instruction, or even everyone at some important place like PB headquarters.

I�ll volunteer to instruct with the understanding that I�m only an intermediate fly caster but feel comfortable in teaching beginners.

Brandon Powers told me he would donate his time and skills to teach all levels.
As many of you know from the past PB conference, Brandon is a certified instructor, and this would be a great opportunity for anyone interested.

Any ideas or interest?

On public waters where sunfish get pounded hard, fishing a dry fly is often the trick. Almost no one fly fishes and those that do rarely use dry flies for sunfish, mostly poppers and foam critters. Lots and lots of fun!

Man, you TX guys sure stick together...I'm jealous. Too bad I'm so far North -I think this opportunity sounds GREAT!

I don't think I can square a trip to Texas just for that. But I am strongly thinking of bringing my flyfishing stuff to PBCon III in September with hopes of grabbing some instruction.

I'm hoping I learn what I'm doing so I can do some flyfishing while I'm there. :)Since George so graciously gave my wife and I lessons,the wind has been blowing like 40 miles an hour.
