I'd like to hear the pond "heavyweights" weigh in on supercooling your pond with winter aeration to the point of killing fish. Lots of speculation back and forth from what I gather...

I haven't done it with aeration, Justin, but at the tail end of last Winter we had three separate supercooling-inducing weather events (2x temps below freezing with winds too high to allow pond to ice over lasting more than one day, 1x 15" of snow falling into the open water of the pond) that caused me to lose a number of large RES. All three of these dropped the temp of the pond down, like over-aerating in deep water but without the electric bill.

Not sure I'm in those threads but one of the first years I had ran not one but two diffusers in my small .62 acre pond! That spring after ice out I had stressed bass that were dying left and right. It didn't bother the trout though that were in that pond at the time.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

It has been a while since I have been on the site here, but I would like to add that if an initial kill is not aprarent when the water becomes cooler than the fish can handle, the stress induced by this colder water makes the fish available for disease. Just like us, if we are not comfortable in our environment, we are too cold, we make ourselves available for the flu or other sickness.

Gotta love that Eastern hospitality!!!! Yep!  I went back to Massachusetts a few years ago on vacation to do some fishing. I stopped for directions at a Marina and started out with the following in my Indiana accent whatever that is, "I'm not from around and here and I wonder if you could give me some directions." The snippy lady behind the counter immediately countered with, "Well yeah that's obvious," with a tone I didn't care for. Later I thought a good response to that would have been "Well at least we can say our r's back in Indiana."  Course I may nothave got any directions.  No offense to New Englanders at all as I have lots of friends in New England but it's a fact some leave out the 'r's as in paking lot vs. parking lot or ca instead of car. When I got a job working at a movie theater while In college, I was sure the ticket girl was from New England as she didn't say her 'r's. When I asked her if she was from New England she gave me a puzzled look. I said, "I'm asking because your r's are silent." She replied with a very annoyed look which meant asking her for a date was out of the question at any point in the future, "I have a speech impediment." Boy did I feel like a heel!
