Gorgeous fish - I mean seed.
You guys need to check up on the population dynamics of BG , PS and RES in the same pond before you flood Zetts with orders.

For those of us near the edge of the RES Winter survival envelope, PS could be an alternative snail eater that's safe pretty much every year.

I can see an order flood for Zett's if they ship! I called Zetts yesterday to see if they knew what happened to my favorite trout dealer. That's a whole 'nother story. (He went out of business this year because he couldn't afford to be in business. He supplied Zetts and many others -- and small pond guys like me. He is also a neighbor.) Zetts is pretty much shutting down for the winter, as of this weekend. I have no connection with Zetts, other than I have bought a lot of fish from them over the years. As fish suppliers keep going out of business, I sure can recommend Zetts. If the housing business comes back, they will surely sell out, and we won't have a public fish hatchery/supplier servicing northern West Virginia, northern Virginia, western Maryland, or south central Pennsylvania. On a very selfish note, please help keep them in business. If they go out, we'll all be buying from fish trucks out of Arkansas and North Carolina. Let them know you are a Pond Boss member. They don't do a lot of advertising, but if a few more of you tell them you are associated with Pond Boss, maybe I can convince them to place some ads in Pond Boss, and maybe they will survive. Thanks, Ken

Ken, I agree 100%. Sometimes, you just have to bear down and place big orders because you know that you are helping your fish guy/gal/family to stay in business.

On the negative side, PS don't get as big as BG or RES. Like most Lepomids, they will overpopulate and stunt if allowed to do so by insufficient predation.

Guys, there is a fishery in Mounds, Il., that supplies RES. Don't know if that is too far away, and also don't know if he shipps. I bought 250 1-2" RES this fall and they all arrived in great shape. Just a thought. JJ

In my opinion PS are great pond fish. They will still manage to get to "eat'n size" but will take longer than BG, and they will rarely overpopulate in a pond already stocked with BG. In fact, in a BG heavy pond, you may have to restock them from time to time.
I catch some of the most amazing looking PS in the cold water rivers in the Missouri Ozarks. They tend to be pretty small, but the colors are incredible. They are a blast to catch on a flyrod.

I'm not a big Pumpkinseed fan. No reason really, other than that I prefer Bluegill.
Pumpkinseeds in my area are generally overpopulated in most small ponds that I see. Granted most small ponds aren't managed properly - Anyhow, I've gone out of my way to make sure they don't get into the pond I'm managing for BG and SMB. I've noticed in my limited pond experience that bass tend to target younger BG over PS as forage.
On my home lake - PS tend to live shallower, get more nematode parasites. I catch them and Rock Bass in similar habitat in the summers, 8-15 ft deep. Occasionally while fishing for BG - I'll hook into a decent sized Pumpkinseed deeper where the BG are.
They are a pretty fish however - and the fish that I think of when people talk about catching "sunfish".

Interesting about the parasites, F-H.
I'd like to learn more about that.
