Pond Boss Forums GENERAL QUESTIONS Pond Boss Time to get back into the stock market

Now that I've harvested my trout for the year, and the trout pond has been drained, sterilized, dried, and refilled, it's time to get more stock! I'm getting 100 male only brook trout October 20th from a supplier in Michigan. I'm paying extra for him to sort male only fish with no bad fins. (I volunteered that as I don't have good luck selling the females to taxidermists.) I can also get up to $100.00 a piece, or more -- if they get as large as I hope they do -- so it pays for itself easily.

These fish should not only be in better shape fin wise than my last brook trout supplier, and be all males, but they will only be yearlings compared to the 2 year olds I got from a different source that were much smaller. That means the potential for bigger better fish like these! I'm excited!

With returns like that I can see why you are pumped. Although them are big and beautiful Cecil, you won't catch native fish that unusually large in any creek that will support them, they would have to fight the current and eventually use all that fat up and stay thin!!!! Nice trout just the same.

True but they do get some hogs in some of the lakes in Canada.

Speaking of that, when are you going to get some Arctic Char and raise them???

My water isn't cold enough for them. They're kind of bland compared to a brookie IMHO anyway.

Interestingly they are raising an arctic char/brook trout hybrid in parts of Canada. Supposed to be hardier than brook trout.

I agree the colors are not as striking but the size potential is there for a very big fish. To catch a wild brookie the size you are raising would be a once in a lifetime catch. Those are REALLY nice Brook Trout.

Well I'm back from my 6 hour round trip with 100 ten to twelve inch male only brookies (a few smaller and a few bigger) swimming in the pond. I think hauling was a success as they were already feeding a few hours after putting them into the pond. I used both the freshflow aerator and pure oxygen this time and it showed. The fish were so lively we couldn't hardly hold them in the net when I scooped them out. I also use .5 percent salt in the tank and I believe that is must.

I'm really excited about these fish as they all have excellent fins (pond raised) and they are only yearlings vs. the two year olds raceway reared fish I got from another source in the past that were only 6 to 8 inches.
