Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Hurricanes and Floating Deck

With Gustav bearing down, I don't have a clue how or even whether to secure my floating deck.

The deck is 8x16', built from treated 2x12's with 2x6 deck. It weighs about 1000lbs.

If we get 90mph wind here as we did for Rita and Lili, I can imagine the deck heaving against the bank for 24 straight hours and being damaged. I don't imagine the waves will be higher than 6-8", but the 24 hour duration could do me in.

It's probably going to be a real pain to lift out of the pond with my 46hp Kubota, but I think I can do it. Should I try to remove it, or has anyone had good success anchoring down a floating deck in a hurricane?

Or should I just set it free and hope for the best?

BTW, for you guys on the Gulf coast, what are your hurricane plans for floating or stationary decks, docks, and piers?

I think I would try to place it where it gets the least wind influence. With the changing direction of the winds that can be a problem. Is this it or are you talking about the small houseboat you once posted?




If this is it then we have something similar. We drag it onshore about 1/3 on shore (enough so that it will not float off). Never had any damage. However I note that our floats are not subject to tearing up that way.

Yea, that's the one! I have since built a more substantial gang plank that is detachable. (don't remember ever posting a house boat pic, and don't even know of one)

I never thought of dragging it partly on shore. Since it's so heavy, I think it would stay put.

I hope that hurricane goes somewhere else, like Antarctica.

Thanks for the prayers guys. They're needed and appreciated, especially for our friends south of I-10. North of I-10, we get smacked around a bit, but usually come out OK.

We are tying down and looking for some wind. Really hope it is mild as I am not up to clean up and repair. We are about 30 miles from the coast. If we leave the neighbors would be coming and breaking into the house, they live in a trailer and the last time it almost split in half. We are concerned as everyone that is in the path. I feel for Louisiana coast as they at this time will be hit hard. Those in need my house is open for shelter if it stands. I am thinking of those that are in the present direct path. We are praying for all that are going to be affected and we will appreciate your prayers.
