I just bought a minnow trap to put in my lake. What should I use as bait for the trap?

Ross, The first couple of times I used my minnow trap I baited it with bread. I got great results but I also had good results with canned corn. I submerged mine about 4 feet from the bank in about 2 feet of water. There was even a couple of times that I didn't put anything in the trap but still got plenty of minnows. FYI you will probably get some small BG mixed in with the minnows.

You just lay it on the bottom....right? Yessir. If it is cylindrical, lay it parallel with the bank. Sometimes they swim in, as they normally comb the areas near the bank. I may not know about olo-tooths, but I can catch minnows.

Dog food works good as an addition to bread.

someone told me that all you had to do was put a piece of PVE pipe in the trap and that will attract the minnows. I dont know if its true but has anyone tried it?

I have relocated a lot of BG, CNBG and sometimes Redears and bullheads from my forage pond. I use a trap the size of a 30 gallon barrel.
I put pellets in a paint strainer bag and tie the top. Then I put a handful of pellets in the trap and toss it in the drink. Next, I toss a small handful of pellets around the vicinity. I check and empty it ever hour or 2.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I do what Dave does, except for the fact that I use "women's hosiery" instead of a paint strainer bag. It's good at keeping the pellets in one spot and obviously releases their into the water. Plus, the minnows can't actually eat the pellets, so it's the bait that keeps on catching.
Watch out for turtles--if they get in there, they'll get upset and tear the bag to pieces to get at the pellets. And don't tell your wife she's missing anything.

I use pellets in cheesecloth wired to the top of the trap.

I just put floating pellets in the minnow trap. If course my minnow trap is made from fine mesh, but if yours is coarse, you can tie a square of hardware cloth to the top of the trap.
I learned a long time ago for reading Pond Boss, to take your coffee firmly in hand and scoot your chair back... way back... from the keyboard and monitor. You get a few cofee stains on the floor, but your keyoard and monitor are safe from all but a few light sputters. I started loosely rating the posts in sputter-feet. I think Brettski holds the record, with a 4 footer.
