Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose Walleye, Wipers & SMB

I�ve asked this question before with little response, so I�m gonna try again. We are located in south central Kansas, about 20 miles north of the oklahoma boarder. We finished excavation on our new pond 30 days ago. It will be about 2 acres when it�s full, averaging 10-12 feet deep, with some gradual slopes and a couple nice shelves, as well as some flooded trees. It has a small spring that runs about 10 months out of the year, as well as run-off from surrounding grassland. The surrounding soil is a sandy dirt, they hit clay as they got down a couple feet, and the deepest areas are shale. We would like to stock Wipers, Walleye & Smallmouth Bass. We intend on having a feeding program for our Wipers and our hatchery guy said they can provide us some SMB that will eat pellets as well.
1. Can this variety of fish work in our pond together?
2. What�s the best forage fish to stock with this variety?
3. Can Walleye be trained to eat pellets?

You are "treading on new ground" with this stocking combination. Very few have done this before, thus experience and advice will be limited. To get much more information that what you already have from this site, you may have to go to another location to find those with different experiences.

I think if you want to do this you are going have to use your best guess ideas after you collect any available information. I think I gave you my opinions earlier of what I thought would be best from my experiences with these three predators.

After you have managed this combination for several years you will be considered knowledgable and looked to for advice. Hopefully you will be able to keep us advised of your progress.

I will seek other opinions and keep you posted on how it goes, we are determined to try this combination, unless a trustworthy expert tells us to STOP.

Have you tried talking with Kansas Wildlife and Parks about your combination? They may have additional info on this matter and are usually glad to help. I would think this combo will work as many of our lakes here have that combination.I too am from Kansas and just a little north of you in Wichita. If you do get this going, I would be glad to come down and help you do a "sampling" in a couple of years!!

Big bass, As a matter a fact, after getting that reply from Cody, I did contact them today. I have some very good dialog going with a Biologist that seems as excited as I am about the prospect. No doubt there are some boundary�s being pushed here, but with the kind of loving care we are willing to put forth, I�m sure great things are to come.
