I found a crawfish crawling behind my truck yesterday morning. I think it sprinkled a little bit because the grass was wet, but we haven't had a rain in a while. My pond is 1/4 mile away and I have never seen any traces of crawfish there. It's also full of catfish. The creek is over a half mile away. And there are no puddles left anywhere around.
I've seen them crawling around different places after a rain but never this dry and so far away from water. I told my kids that we'll probably never see that again.

If you have a marshy area around your place, they can live there as well. I have seen a low spot in a field behind a school that had crawfish in it. It never had standing water for more than a week, but they were there. The science teacher used to take her kids out to dig them up to dissect each fall.
Water dries, rocks crumble, and trees die. The only thing that is eternal is the reputation we leave behind.

It's a lot drier here. There are never any mounds in the middle of a field like in wetter parts of Texas.
