So here's the deal, I have a new pond going in next to an already restored wetland. I will be removing tile and building a dike to retain the water leaving my wetland. I have a pond I put in a few years back, which was simply dug on the edge of the same wetland. The pond is a wildlife pond and has many critters that use it. There are plenty of Muskrats that like to tunnel around the edges. However I'm thinking I don't need any tunnels in my new dike. I got a tip to lay an old chain link fence along dike and bury it. This is said to keep the rats out. Anybody ever try, or even hear of this?

I added used chain link to most of my pond and yes it works great. I got the idea from a friend who happens to work for state wildlife service. He put it in his successfully also.
I have a buddy that owns a fence company. I asked him to save me rolls of 4' high trash fence (they remove and dispose of a lot of fence). The fence extends from just out of the water down, and the 4' was easier to handle than 8'. I just unrolled it and let the vegetation grow through and over. I did get some muskrats below the fence because the pond was not full. Trapped them out and now it is almost full and I am hoping the 4' size will work as well for me as it did for my friend.

If you keep your dam mowed, most muskrats won't mess with it. They like to have cover to hide themselves and to use for nest making.

h20 - My muskrats did not read that book about not liking short grass. The muskrats do stay out of the area with the chainlink fence.

Thanks,I'll find some and try it! Now lets see... where does one find 300' of cheap fence? Hmm maybe I could trade some Muskrats for some!

Try a fence contractor. My guy has a 40' empty truck they fill up once every 2 or 3 months with scrap fence - they take it to the scrap yard for a few hundred bucks.
