Flame, what worked best for me in Oklahoma where I grew up was to use a clear plastic bobber and drop the bait about a foot or so below the bobber with no weight let the bait swim free. I used golden shiners and the larger ones in the 4" size worked good. If you can find the bobbers that let u add water inside them for additional weight worked best. If needed u can cut the tail fin back on the shiners to where it can move it's tail but little movement gives it some added attraction.
