A friend of mine has caught skunks in the live traps a few times and has found that if you approach the "skunk in trap" with a tarp that hides your body from the skunk and then cover and wrap the trap with the tarp that the skunk will not spray while concealed in the tarp. The tarp may also save you from a direct hit in case it does spray.
It may just be a matter of your standing with the higher power, but...
