I'll go along with the 2 Johns. Fatheads are tough and can often live through water issues. You may have gotten some sick or stressed fish. Interesting that the BG didn't have a problem so I don't expect water issues.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
