Have your soil tested. It is inexpensive and will give you a good baseline from which to make decisions (chemical analysis). If the pond is low in alkalinity or even average ag lime will be a plus for both the fish and visibility. Barley straw has worked in some cases but not in others. Limestone rock can work but only very slowly as it dissolves.
