Savage Model 24, 22 lr over 20 gauge.
I'll second that! My savage 24 22lr/410 is the brush gun I take out on the place. My second choice would be the Taurus Judge if I needed my hands free.
Both guns take shot or slug, you cant' go wrong.
Now, some of you folks with bears and the like...you're on your own. Get a big gun or stay home. You can find the Savages in larger rifle bore and shot gun sizes. Get your wallet out. Even the smaller caliber 24's in good shape go for $300 to $500.
