I have seen the "dwindles" in fish that have been breeding for an extended length of time. It is easy to see a reduction in weight and sometimes the fish will take it too far making them susceptible to a range of health issues. Even in a tank setting where nutrition is not limiting, a fish can only invest so much in reproduction before they seem to just give out and can not be reconditioned to breed regardless of my efforts.
