Can't go wrong with a 700 in whatever caliber you choose. I have a 700 classic in .243 and .25-06 and love them both . If toting or walking a lot the short actions are lot more tote friendly. 243,7mm-08, .260, .308 all good choices for deer
Concur on the older Rem. 700's...have them in .270 and 30-06...solid firearm.
