For your measuring device you may want to use electrical tape with different banding. For example White = 1' Yellow = 5' Red = 10' so 1 yellow 4 white would be 9'(If your rope is white don't use white they sell blue, green...you name it basically.) We use a similar system on our hoses and it holds up well. If you just use duct tape and write the number on there it may get worn off quickly with repeated use.
